Winning the Mayo intermediate title this year was number one on Kiltane’s list of objectives at the start of the year, they achieved that a number of weeks ago and a summer season of senior championship football now beckons for the north Mayo men. But winning the Mayo title was not the be all and end all of this team’s ambitions and they have taken to the Connacht championships with gusto, and on Sunday they will return to MacHale Park looking for a place in the Connacht final and put themselves in with a chance of doing what both Davitts and Charlestown have done in the two previous years, top off a great season with provincial honours. Then come the spring time a crack at an All Ireland series could await them and set them up for 2014 in style.

Kilmaine booked their place in the Mayo intermediate championship final pulling up on Sunday evening in McHale Park. The south Mayo men ran out seven point winners against Parke, with their opponents failing to register a single score in the second half. Kilmaine's centre half forward Joey Maloney was the main man on show kicking eight of his sides half a dozen scores. Seven of those points were from frees, with sub Joe Cooper putting his hand up for a starting spot in the final with a two point cameo off the bench in the second half.

It is back to the cut and thrust of championship football for the final four sides in both the intermediate and junior championship this weekend. The action gets under way on Saturday evening with a junior championship double header in Mayo GAA headquarters, and Ardnaree and Lahardane meeting in the first semi-final at 5pm, with Cill Chomain and Louisburgh meeting in the second game at 6.30pm.

On and off again became the theme of Mayo’s National Football League meeting with Dublin over the past week. Saturday night’s match against the All Ireland champions was abandoned by referee Marty Duffy at half time, when a thick blanket of fog descended on McHale Park shortly before the median whistle and showed no signs of clearing after a prolonged half time break, forcing the Sligo whistler to abandon the game.

While the post-mortem on Mayo’s inglorious exit from the Connacht championship went on over the week and will go into the future, it’s back to basics this weekend for the inter county football panel when they rejoin their club mates for the first round proper of action in the Royal Theatre senior and intermediate championships.

And only a fortnight after they came together in the opening round of the league, Mayo and Galway will lock horns again on Sunday afternoon in McHale Park in the final of the FBD League with the prize of an away final against New York later in the year in the offing. Galway will be gunning for Mayo after they were comprehensively beaten in the league opener. Mayo picked up their second win of the campaign last weekend with a 1-12 to 1-11 win over Tyrone in Healy Park. Mayo hung on to come out on top by the most slender of margins, after hitting six points without reply to put them four points up midway through the second half, before the homeside rallied in the final 10 minutes to cut the gap to one as time ticked down. Mark Ronaldson had his scoring boots on again as he continued to carry on the good form he has shown since the turn of the year, bagging 1-6 last Sunday, with four of his points coming from play. Donal Vaughan was another who impressed over the course of the game as the young Ballinrobe man continues to develop well in the early stages of his inter-county career. John O’Mahony also used last weeks game to give a number of players some game time off the bench, with Barry Kelly, Kieran Conroy, Neil Douglas, and Mikey Sweeney all getting their first game time of the national league this term.

Time has ticked by very quickly since Mayo took their final bow in the championship for 2008 on a warm August Saturday in Croke Park, slipping out of the championship at the hands of the eventual winners, Tyrone, by a solitary point. And with Cormac Reilly’s final whistle that day attention turned to 2009 and the talk of the pubs and sidelines as to what went wrong over the past two years. Well one thing is for sure, John O’Mahony is still in the hot seat and will remain there for the next couple of years after being given a new deal in the autumn. Who will make up his side this Sunday and for the rest of the year will be talking points for the next few weeks as a side begins to take shape as the opening rounds of the National League slip by.
